This project was undertaken for Sullivan & Mitchell to a converted Victorian piano works in central London. Security, aesthetics, conservation and usability were key criteria.
At the time, it was the only doorway in or out of the premises. Being a multi-purpose building, used for accommodation, work space and leisure, we had to consider all of these functions alongside ease of evacuation in an emergency and installation logistics. Farringdon Road is a "red route" into the city and posed challenges with the works having to be scheduled for a weekend to allow us to comply with traffic rules. Using toughened glass set into stainless steel frames, the appearance and strength were achieved. Integrating magnetic locks with the door entry system and using a combination of multi way closers and exit hardware, the rest of the brief was completed. A maintenance agreement was put in place and after a trial period of 5 years, the client had a similar door system installed in an adjoining part of the building.
